Cooking Up an Interactive Olfactory Game Display

Abstract
The authors have developed an olfactory display capable of realtime scent blending. Because their display can blend multiple odor components into numerous "recipes," it offers a significant variety of smells. Moreover, users can change the recipes continuously in real time. The authors have used this olfactory display to add scents to both movies and animations to study how olfaction contributes to presence. The results of their follow-on questionnaire revealed that the scene with the appropriate smell attracted users' attention and, moreover, that contrasting a pleasant smell with an offensive smell increased users' attention.
