Abstract
Synchronization is an important problem in communication networks especially for real time applications. Synchronization can be done in different layers of the ISO model. In this paper, a synchronization algorithm is introduced and applied on Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP), which is layer four protocol. However, the current SCTP standard, RFC 2960, doesn?t specify synchronization mechanism. The Algorithm is applied on periodic traffic and shows synchronization improvement. We examine the Transfer Delay (TD) and the Interarrival Time (IT) as network performance measure. Different levels of the algorithm are introduced to compromise between performance improvement and implementation complexity. The highest performance algorithm is called "maximum delay algorithm". It recovers the IT to its original value however it requires larger buffer especially in case of very high jitter. On the other hand, another algorithm, referred to as "average delay algorithm", solves the buffer problem.
